Greek Yogurt Giveaway and Review from Oikos

August 28, 2010 · 54 comments

Stonyfield Farms is one of my favorite companies: they sell organic yogurt to a number of vendors, and are one of the top yogurt sellers in the country, really getting organics into the mainstream. In recent years, they’ve begun a line called Oikos, an organic Greek yogurt, which comes in a variety of flavors and sizes. I received samples from Oikos to try it out for myself.

Here’s what Oikos has to say:

Oikos Organic Greek yogurt can be used in a variety of ways while cooking – in baking, as a substitute for sour cream, and mayonnaise, and to create tasty low-fat dishes. Greek yogurt is strained, making it thicker and more versatile in recipes than regular yogurt. Oikos is organic, which means it’s made without artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners, and it’s made from organic milk produced without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, chemical fertilizers, antibiotics, or artificial growth hormones (rBST). Through our purchases of organic ingredients, annually we support over 130,000 acres of organic land.

In the past 11 years through our (and you, the customer’s purchases) we have prevented the use of over 1 million treatments of animal synthetic drug treatments. The cows thank you!

Want to buy Oikos? Use the storefinder to locate a dealer near you, and use their coupons too.

  • Plain (16 oz): The yogurt in these larger tubs seemed thicker than the smaller containers, which I prefered. This yogurt was nice and thick and tart, exactly what I expect Greek yogurt to be like.
  • Plain (5.3 oz): I loved the tart flavor of this one, but was not quite as thick as I had hoped.
  • Blueberry (5.3 oz) : The blueberry’s at the bottom of this yogurt, allowing you to mix it in. I loved that this one was less sweet than many other brands of blueberry yogurt.
  • Honey (5.3 oz): The honey is on the bottom of this one, but was too sweet for me. I’d rather add in my own honey to plain yogurt, but if you like honey, this will be a good choice.
  • Chocolate (multipack): This one was nice as a treat instead of ice cream, with its mild chocolate flavor. I had hoped this would have a thick texture, but it was more on the runny side. It tasted great with cookies crumbled into it.
  • Caramel (multipack): The caramel flavor was also nice as a treat. I usually don’t care for caramel, but this flavor was pretty good, but just a bit too sweet compared to the chocolate. It also worked well as dessert.

And for the giveaway…Oikos will send one winner an Oikos tote bag, four free 5.3 oz coupons, one free multipack coupon, and one free 16 oz coupon. This is an excellent package, allowing you to try all kinds of flavors of Oikos. The giveaway is open until Tuesday, August 31st at 11:00pm EST, and I will choose one random winners. (Sorry, open to U.S. addresses only.)

For entries (up to four per person):

  1. Write a comment about which Oikos recipe you would like to try.
  2. Tweet about this giveaway and leave a comment letting me know.
  3. Post a link about this giveaway on your blog, and leave a comment here.

I never thought of using it on pizza. I'd have to sub out the feta, I'm allergic but that's pretty neat.

Jordan P August 28, 2010

Once I used Oikos plain as a marinade for chicken and made some YUMMY greek chicken pitas!! I'd do that again in a heartbeat.

Debbie August 28, 2010

I love Oikos! I have been wanting to try the chocolate, but like you were hoping for a thicker texture. I love the caramel and use it as a dip for apples or grapes! I never thought about baking with it, but that cannoli cream with wafers sounds delicious!

Robin August 28, 2010

I'd love to make tzatziki with it!! I haven't had that since I was in Greece with my parents when I was 14 :)

I love Greek yogurt and have a lot of fun substituting it into certain recipes. I've used it a lot as a replacement for sour cream (either in baking or on Mexican dishes). But I'd love to try the pineapple and macadamia nut muffins! Those look amazing!!

Tried to get the links for stonyfield to work, but the page would never load… I see that another commenter has mentioned blueberry scones and I would love to make those! I have used their yogurt before in cakes and it works great and makes them deliciously moist.

Marci August 28, 2010

Oikos is my favorite too. I'd love to try it in muffin or loaf recipes.

Lawyer Loves Lunch August 28, 2010

Oooh, I love Oikos (though I generally eat it too quickly to save for any recipe). I heart tandoori chicken so the tandoori chicken recipe looks awesome :)

I like the mushroom casserole recipe!

I don't eat a lot of dairy, but Oikos is one of the few yogurts I do eat. I like the honey and chocolate flavors a lot. It was a life saver when I was pregnant and needed protein and calcium!

That cheesecake with lemon curd sounds delicious!

kateiscooking August 29, 2010

Absolutely the curried apricot chicken salad. Yogurt would be SO much better than mayon in that. It'd just play better with the flavors. Kate
